Repudiate the Congress
10/04/06 at 10:47:21

This is simple, not simple-minded; nor is it a coldly calculated piece of logic, but rather a letter to the local paper marshalling the forces of democracy. It should be done nation-wide.

to wit:
Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely. There is very little for thinking Americans to disagree with in this. So let's apply this truth to the election process, and repudiate the Congress in November. I suggest that if every one of the 435 Representatives and each of the 33 Senators running for reelection were defeated by us, we'd be better off, and Congress couldn't deny the message that we repudiate their corruption.

An additionally significant effect would be that it would place a Democratic majority in the House which could then cut George Bush's purse strings. The only way the English could keep their kings from running amuck with foreign wars was by cutting their purse strings; by the American people repudiating the Congress in front of the whole world, it would be seen as our way of demanding a more focussed strategy over the religious extremist killers that we all desire eliminating.

Let's take bold steps and do this. It translates into defeating Congressman McHenry and voting Democratic in November. Threw them out. Throw him out. Repudiate the Congress.

Now for the previous letter to the News Herald Editor, (Aug 6, 2006)

to wit:
A couple of years ago, during the propaganda run-up to the invasion of Iraq, you opined that you were fed up with people disrespecting the good ol' USA, were tired of it, in fact, angry at Them; invading Iraq would be a good way to show Them what we were made of.

I'd like to suggest that you find the courage to recognize the reality of the situation in Iraq today, the reality of the moment to moment lives of Iraqis and Americans there, recognize the horror we have had a large portion in delivering to them because our misplaced anger.

Republican Senator Hagel, a Viet Nam veteran, and an individual particularly well informed about the situation, today spoke strongly for our withdrawal. Today he insisted that it is untenable to place our soldiers in the middle of a civil war. I think it is time to declare victory in the destruction of the core of Al-Quaeda, and develop a realistic and practical strategy in dealing with those Evildoers who employ tactics that destroy innocent people. Such tactics are so horrible, so repulsive that people of all nations will unify to defeat them. Those Evildoers only victories will occur when we become much like them by blundering into situations and tactical traps wherein we employ actions all too similar to their own. Because of this war fixation, we are failing to focus on Pakistan, Kashmir, Afganisthan- the nexus of terriorism (or for further example, have made no practical effort in increasing our skills in using Urdu, Farsi, Russian, Chinese, or other Asian languages so as to better manage these traps.)

If you do not believe that Good, Honor, and Truth are some of our strongest tools and their use bring our triumphs, then you must have a very difficult time believing in the triumph of democracy and liberty. I am persuaded that the streaks of authoritarianism found in the vacuousness of the Presidency illustrates this weakness and compounds its foolhardiness.

The best I can suggest is that each American give some soul searching-  time, thought, heart, - to the horror of our men facing daily in the 120 degree heat-  give them some time of your heart and mind-  they deserve some soul searching from each of us daily- and discover if it is not true that they, the soldiers of the USA, have been sent into a profoundly and grieviously mistaken war.

This war has weakened us and tainted us, but the American people must speak so that the world will know that we have repudiated this war, and have recaptured our country, and have thus joined, in fact, are leading a unity of peoples of the world that will unmask the weaknesses of the ideologies of hatred, vengeance, and retaliation.

Repudiate the Congress and the vested interests of those spending our money on a stupid war! Think it over, Mr. Editor, and fellow citizens. Turn them out of Congress, cut off the $$$ to the warmongers. And tell the world that the American people have done it! The American people are sovereign.

Larry, I appreciate your continued involvement in world issues.  May it serve as a reminder to us all.

I'm hurt by conservative Christianity's blind belief a Christian president will automatically serve the will of our God and rejoice at the rise in such bumper stickers as "What would Jesus drive?" and "Who would Jesus bomb?" We all, especially Christians, should be thinking through every issue, renewing our minds constantly and taking no truth for granted.  Embracing this, I still remain disillusioned w/government in general and my ability as an individual to truly make any difference in that regard.    I've found myself retreating more and more to the idea that if we are to make any difference in the world at large it must be through our lives individually.  I poke at the edges of of issues, sending pre-written letters, clicking on easy links online, despite much concern failing to come up with any new thoughts of my own.  I know if I want to make a difference in the lives of children in Uganda I can adopt a Ugandan child and change her life.  I know that if I want Christians consuming less gasoline I can drive a responsible car.  I know if I want racial issues mended within God's church I can develop cross-racial relationships.  These things I know.  I also know Iraq has turned into a big mess, one driven by racial and religious issues my generation of Americans can't begin to really understand.  I know from friends who have fought over there they're hands are tied, repeating puppet arrests, releases after the max legal holding period, arrests and releases over and over again. They make middle of the night raids on civilian homes only only to be told to release the family who, it turns out, are the wrong people.  I know this war, as with most things bureaucratical, is a mess.  What I don't know is what we do instead.  We have Ahmadinejad next door promising his people the complete annihilation of America and Christianity.  We have Kim Jong Il flouting his nuclear abilities and making not-so-veiled threats, all while the UN practices its impotent skills of parenting: threat with no follow-through; threat with no follow-through; severe threat with no follow-through.  What weight do peacekeepers with no guns carry?  I am in no way advocating a rush to war, but as a green citizen of this world I ask, what can I do?  I say, "Gideon, do not hit Isaac."  He raises his fist.  I say, "Gideon, don't you hit Isaac or you'll be sorry."  He begins his swing.  I say, "Gideon, I swear, if you hit Isaac. . ."  Gideon hits Isaac and I say, "Well now I'm pretty upset at you." Now Gideon knows he can not only hit Isaac but wield power and get a rise out of me all in one.  Applying no meaningful repurcussions means I have not only allowed Gid to hit Isaac, but endorsed any further strikes against both Isaac and Phineas, undermined my own authority and allowed him a taste of power he is not yet ready to handle on his own.  If sanctions are not enough to make a difference I ask in all sincerity, Larry, what do we do?  I don't want a continued bungled war in Iraq, but I also don't want to create a vacuum for Ahmadinejad to step into.  I want to tell my representatives to stop botching the job, but not unless I have an alternative to hand them.  That leaves me stuck up the creek at this point.  I can't tell them to stop what they're doing unless I've a substitute plan in mind.  Please, tell me, what can we do instead?
